What to wear in Dubai in winter

Warm afternoons, cool evenings and cold desert nights. How to dress for a Dubai winter with light layers instead of a heavy coat.

Two women walk a sandy desert path at golden hour, one in a long cardigan and headscarf over a linen dress, one in a knit vest and wide trousers.

Winter is the season most people in Dubai wait for. The heat eases, the evenings turn cool, and you can sit outside, walk by the water or spend a night in the desert. It is also the season when getting dressed takes a little more thought, because one day can hold two kinds of weather.

A warm afternoon in the sun can become a cool evening by the sea. A mall or an office can feel colder than the street outside. And in the desert, or up in the mountains, nights can be properly cold. So the useful question in winter is not “what is the weather now?” It is “where will I be at nine tonight?”

Dress for the whole day, not the hour you leave

The simplest rule for a Dubai winter: plan your outfit around the coolest part of your day, then make it easy to take a layer off.

Start with a base you would be happy in at lunchtime. A cotton or linen shirt, a light long dress or a fine knit top all work. Then add one layer you can carry without thinking about it: a light knit, an overshirt, a long cardigan or an unlined jacket. If you will be out after dark, bring it, even if you leave home in bright sun.

This is why a heavy winter coat rarely makes sense here. You would spend most of the day carrying it. Two light layers almost always do more than one thick one, and you can take them off one at a time.

The pieces that do the most work

You do not need a separate winter wardrobe. A handful of pieces, worn in turn, cover most of the season.

  • A fine knit. Merino wool or cotton, in a calm neutral. It goes over a shirt, under a jacket or on its own.
  • An overshirt. A heavier shirt you wear open, like a light jacket. It suits almost everyone and works with jeans, wide trousers and long skirts.
  • A long cardigan or open coat. It adds warmth and length without bulk, which makes it one of the most useful pieces for modest dressing.
  • A scarf or wrap. The smallest thing you can carry that makes the biggest difference at night. It also changes the look of a plain outfit.
  • Closed shoes. Loafers, clean sneakers or ankle boots for cool evenings and sandy paths. Keep sandals for the warm days.
  • Trousers in a heavier weave. Wool blends, thicker cotton or denim feel right when the air turns cool.

If you wear an abaya, the same idea applies. A light abaya with a fine knit or a long cardigan underneath often works better than a heavier abaya you will be too warm in by noon. For men, a fine knit or an overshirt over a shirt does the same job on a weekend, and many men change to a heavier kandura in a deeper color once the evenings turn cool.

Colors for the cooler months

Winter is a good time to bring out the deeper colors you might put away in summer: camel, navy, forest green, burgundy and chocolate brown. They look right in the softer light, and they are kinder to the dust of a desert trip than white is.

You do not have to give up light colors either. Cream, oat and stone with one deeper piece looks fresh and calm. If you are not sure which deeper shades suit you, our guide to finding your color season explains how to tell.

Plans that need a little more thought

An evening in the desert. Once the sun goes down it can feel much cooler than the city, and sand gets everywhere. Choose closed shoes, a long layer and a scarf you can wrap around you. Leave anything you would hate to shake sand out of at home.

Dinner outside by the water. Sea air can feel cool even after a warm day. A wrap or a knit over your shoulders is often all you need.

A trip to the mountains. Pack as if you were going somewhere else entirely: a proper jacket, a warm knit, long trousers and closed shoes. The higher you go, the colder it gets.

A long day that starts at the office. Air conditioning does not take the winter off. Keep a knit at your desk or in your bag.

A rainy day. Rain is not common, but when it comes, swap suede and light canvas shoes for a pair that does not mind water, and leave long hems that touch the ground for another day.

A simple formula

When you are not sure, use this: one light base, one warm layer, closed shoes, and a scarf or wrap. Change the colors and fabrics, and the same formula takes you from a weekend walk to a family dinner.

Here is how it can look in practice:

  • A weekend walk: a white shirt, wide camel trousers, a navy knit over your shoulders and white sneakers.
  • Dinner outside: a long sand dress, a long cream cardigan, loafers and a soft wrap for later.
  • A desert evening: dark straight trousers, a long-sleeved cotton top, an overshirt, ankle boots and a warm scarf.

Let the weather do the planning

The hardest part of a Dubai winter is not the clothes. It is remembering the evening when you dress in the morning. When Tiraaz opens, Today’s outfit is made for this: each morning it puts an outfit together from your own clothes, with that day’s weather in mind, so the warm layer is part of the plan from the start.

Until then, a quick look at the evening forecast before you get dressed does most of the work. Enjoy the season. It is the one we wait for all year.
